![]() There are also some trigger warnings, particularly related to sexual violence. We forget what it’s like to be a teenager and feel embarrassed because we’re different, but this book reminded me of those feelings, which were a little hard to revisit. I think so often we don’t realize how much influence the popular kids in school have on kids, even at an early age. ![]() I really like the lesson this book teaches about how not to treat other people in the world. ![]() ![]() I do want to give the dark romance genre another shot though, so if anyone has any recommendations that are not as god awful as this book, send them my way. I was either annoyed or outright bored for at least 75% of this book, and that's being generous. I'd heard mixed things, but from what I'd heard about the plot it sounded like something I would enjoy, or at least be interested in. It's a shame, because I wanted to like this book. And oh my god, I can not read another 'romance' where the characters just hate-fuck a couple times and decide they're in love without sharing even a single positive moment with each other. His theme song might as well be Norman fucking Rockwell by Lana Del Rey. ![]() Misha serves to remind me of why I am terrified of men. Not a single one of the characters is likeable (except for Manny, who honestly deserves so much better). This book feels like something straight from Wattpad, written by some 15 year old girl who's never experienced anything vaguely romantic in her life. ![]() ![]() ![]() A depiction of small town life with all its comforts and its terrors, this memoir speaks to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider in America. The town responds in radically different ways to the couple’s presence, from prayer vigils on the village green to a feature article in the family section of the local newspaper. ![]() Mixing humor with memorable prose, Blum recounts how a quiet, conservative town in an impoverished stretch of Appalachia reacts as she and a local woman, Connie, fall in love, move in together, and determine to live their life together openly and truthfully. ![]() Blum, author of the critically acclaimed novel Amnesty, now tells the story of her own life and her decision to be out, loud, and pregnant. This is a funny, moving story about life in a small town, from the point of view of a pregnant lesbian. ![]() ![]() Yost has done an excellent job of creating each character’s backstory, adding depth and layers to their personalities. The story depicts the role of British intelligence during the war in Iraq, introducing characters as former intelligence officers whose past has made it difficult for them to continue down the same path. Set in 2015, Yost has carefully curated fictional characters against the backdrop of real-life events, crafting an impeccable example of historical fiction. ![]() ML Yost has managed to create a lasting impression with Conflict of Intrigues.
